She is like the beauty of the Australian outback personified, boldly beautiful, larger than life and truly captivating. Jaylie’s lifestyle content is more like “I woke up like this,” than a curated highlight reel. It is fearless, no excuses and she actually does it and not just talks about it. The aesthetic is not filtered, and perfect and it is giving a “live in the moment” vibe. Jaylie makes one feel like they are also along for the ride. Jaylie has not been without controversy however. In 2024, she grabbed the headlines, but not in a good way. In the video, Jaylie said “I’m in Far North Queensland at the moment and I thought it would be a good idea to get a whole chook and throw it to one of the crocs, and he’s absolutely loving it”. Jaylie had said in response to “you can’t go anywhere near the crocodile,” that she “didn’t go near it and I stayed well away from the bank”. She had posted a content video about what is illegal and expressly prohibited. In Far North Queensland, leaning over the edge of a boat, she had thrown an entire, cooked chicken, which she referred to as a “chock,” in the video, into the Russell River, to feed a crocodile and then boasted about it. It made the rounds of social media instantly. According to ABC news Australia, feeding crocodiles is very controversial because it leads to fatal crocodile attacks. The fact that Jaylie had fed a crocodile right after a fatal crocodile attack on a man in Cape York, was very contentious. He had been attacked by a crocodile, with the animal having to be killed because of it. Video from the area showed that the crocodile had been fed by many people in the area, leading up to the fatal attack. Mr. Kemp said “so that animal had started to associate people and food, and that location and food”.

This prompted Queensland to increase penalties for the illegal feeding of crocodiles. Feeding crocodiles outright carries a $2580 penalty or if prosecuted in a court of law the penalty is $26615. Crocodile conservationists wanted her case to be used as a test for these new laws, which come with stiffer penalties and higher fines. The saltwater crocodile named Clyde, who lives on the banks of the Russell River at Babinda is famous in the area and is part of the ecosystem. Feeding crocodiles is unsafe for humans and crocodiles themselves. The community representation of crocodiles Queensland (CROC) spokesperson Dan Kemp that works with crocodiles in captivity wanted a full investigation. He said “It would be a really good opportunity for people to come down on the right side of the law and make sure that we’re protecting ourselves and the crocodile”. As well as it being imperative to prevent influencers from risking their lives for “content,” like with the stunt with Clyde, the saltwater crocodile. How “people could get a bit complacent and think if they see Clyde up on the riverbank, there’s no other crocodiles around and be too close to the water or take some silly risks”. Clyde is a huge crocodile that is 4.5 meters long and according to the conservationist, “if his behavior starts to change as a result of people feeding him,” “it could obviously be a threat to his safety”. Jaylie, after this unfortunate incident, owned it instead of deflecting and this reaction was telling. She was transparent about it, and released a video where she urged her followers “don’t do what I did”.

Jaylie said that feeding a crocodile was very dangerous and that she had not comprehended the consequences to the environment as well as the legal ones. She said that feeding a it was “stupid and dangerous”. She confided “now this is stupid in any case, for the obvious reasons that it is so dangerous to feed saltwater crocs”. She owned up to it and made a video called ‘croc awareness in Australia” where Jaylie had said that since the incident, she has educated herself and knows “that feeding crocs is detrimental to them and the public safety because it changes the behavior of the crocs”. Jaylie made this into a teachable moment where upon educating herself, she had educated others and brought awareness to her followers. This incident with feeding the crocodile Clyde, had ironically increased her reach and visibility, as it is always associated with her in the press. Controversy is like a double edged sword, as it could be bad for a creator’s credibility and brand image. While at the same time sees the influencer blow up on social media, thereby increasing their reach. She had become even more famous due to this. After this incident, Jaylie was seen as an adventurer that pushed boundaries. It set her apart from other influencers, if for the reason that she does something different, with an element of danger, that became unforgettable.

It certainly added depth to her story, she wasn’t just another pretty influencer vlogging her travel adventures. Her response also shaped how this incident was perceived, she apologized and owned it. Reshaping the incident by her response to it, that it was not deliberate but a mistake, which one can learn from. She maintained her image but made it one of being more real to her followers, and not infallible. Her brand image evolved and the crocodile incident did not redefine her negatively. The highlight of the stay was the ‘Bush Baths,’ which are two deep, claw foot tubs filled up for a refreshing bubble bath. What made it special, was the breakfast spread which was laid out for the guests on a wooden table between the baths. Fresh bread and clotted cream, selections of jams, berries, croissants, yoghurt and a selection of granola with fresh squeezed orange juice. A very stylish way to enjoy the Bush. The bath house in an “outhouse” style even had a characteristic rams head on the wall. She profiles the beautiful waterfalls at Gibbs River Road, with the footage that she shot by drone.
