Ellie-Jean Coffey, is a professional Australian surfer, content creator and Shore Thang model. She has had her share of trauma. Her independent spirit, confident exterior and beauty belies deep trauma. Coming up as a young surfer, she had experienced misogynistic abuse by male surfers. Surfing is essentially a male dominated sport, and as a young woman trying to become established in this field, Ellie-Jean experienced physical intimidation and bullying. This left emotional scars so deep that it changed the trajectory of her life.

Ellie-Jean Coffey essentially had to give up surfing as she was contending with thoughts of suicide from the multitude of abuse. The competitive environment of surfing did not leave much room to express the pain which Ellie-Jean was going through. Which had a profound impact on Ellie Jean’s mental health and sense of self worth. The humiliation, and exclusion which manifested as physical abuse as well as psychological abuse, had an overwhelmingly negative effect on Ellie-Jean.

Ellie-Jean had experienced all of this during her most formative years as a surfer. The abuse which she suffered in this industry, at the hands of male surfers made her feel unsafe. Ellie-Jean opened up in an interview with Yahoo about the “misogyny,” in this “toxic” industry, “where as much as I loved surfing, I just completely broke down,” after experiencing “mental” and “physical” abuse which was “terrible” and “horrifying”. It is still with her today, as she navigates the trauma that is not always visible on the outside. With this experience imprinting on Ellie’s sense of self worth and who she can trust. The whole industry, from surfing clubs, organizations to sponsors, coaches were all a part of it in one way or another.

As a young athlete, Ellie-Jean did not have any support to navigate this. The sport of surfing was far from inclusive, and her safety was not ensured, rather it was on Ellie to endure the mistreatment and abuse. Experiencing gender based violence in a sport as a woman has altered Ellie-Jean’s perception of herself. As “the abuse, both mentally and physically, I endured during my teenage years far away from home with adults in positions of power has haunted me my whole life,” as she shared in an interview with OK magazine US.

Ellie-Jean lamented how “it goes back decades, this misogyny and male dominated industry, it’s really toxic”. Essentially, this is an environment where the power of men dominates. She was humiliated, intimidated and sexualized in this environment of sport.

Ellie-Jean had no support and no one outside of her family knew what was going on. It is like she had to accept it, that it was “part of the culture”. Even though it was wrong and not her fault, but the fault of the abusers. According to Ellie, the managers and the people in positions of power really abuse that too, not just me, but a lot of girls.”

She internalized the abuse. Survivors of abuse experience the after effects and trauma after the bullying had stopped. Being hyper vigilant is a manifestation of abuse. One is always on guard, on the lookout for threats. Another symptom is fear and the anxiety which grows out of this, especially being frightened of situations that mimic the original abuse. The victim tends to carry the blame and the shame of what happened, even though it was never her fault. The survivor feels like the shame of this abuse is hers to carry. Which culminates in her losing trust in the sport and the people who are in positions of power. She developed a form of “self objectification,” which is the exact psychological term when women evaluate how their bodies look from an outside perspective. This is heightened by increased scrutiny of their body by being watched, evaluated and photographed, causing anxiety and distress. Constantly being sexualized makes for an “externalized body image.”

As an athlete, this vulnerability coexisted with strength, she continued to function despite the trauma, as a form of survival. That itself is trauma response. Furthermore, Ellie comes to this from the position of being viewed through the lens of model, surfer and content creator. As per The Latin Times, she quit surfing eventually because “at first I thought and believed I was the luckiest girl in the world to be living such a life, and not long after that, the darker side of the surfing industry soon revealed itself to me, and it was terrifying”. She had experienced success early on at the age of fourteen.

Coffey lamented how “as much as I loved surfing, I just completely broke down. I couldn’t continue with all the abuse; it almost drove me to suicide, and I was lucky to go get that therapy and recover from it. And I know a lot of girls in the industry who have a very similar story”. She has since stopped surfing competitively in surfing leagues since 2017. Ellie-Jean’s experience is important because sometimes trauma does not look like trauma. This is evident from Ellie-Jean Coffey’s public persona. Not wanting to be confined to the limitations of a hot female surfer viewed through the male gaze. She is forging an identity beyond the surfer girl persona. It has been a long road for Ellie Jean to regain her agency. Having essentially grown up in the water, coming from a family of surfers who seem to be less Kardashians and more Barbarians, there is a complicated person behind that identity.

As a content creator, Ellie-Jean Coffey wanted to reclaim her agency, but ended up devolving. With that, Ellie Jean was able to reclaim her right in telling her own story. After surviving trauma from intimidation in her sport, to finally be able to have a voice is not insignificant. Ellie Jean also has control over her image for the first time and content creation has been a sort of catharsis for her. Deciding on what she keeps private and what she shows the world is important for Ellie, as being visible without surrendering her own agency.

Ellie’s body image belongs to her now after years of being told to lose weight by the surfing industry, even though she had a slender, athletic build. It was like Ellie-Jean Coffey was literally shrinking herself to fit other people’s expectations. This led to battling eating disorders as an athlete who is supposed to be the paragon of health. Creativity was a way for Ellie-Jean to take ownership back from others who controlled her image and body. Ultimately, this means not to be defined by others but by herself, which means not being objectified by others. Ellie-Jean is expressing herself creatively, taking back the dignity which she lost. After her boundaries were tread upon. To be free to determine her boundaries, is everything.

In a recent interview, Ellie-Jean talked about being greatly influenced by the me too movement to speak about her abuse. “A lot of that kind of stuff is coming to light at the moment, and I’ve never really shared that before with anyone - only my close family and friends know it,” and how “absolutely devastating the abuse that I had to face …so I’m just glad that I was able to come out of it stronger and better than ever, to be honest”. When Ellie Jean left the professional world of surfing, she did it on her own terms. She found a space where she could be free, an individual and to be less judged.

Ellie-Jean told Barstool Sports “I would definitely say the freedom to express myself sexually, that part of me has always existed”. When her posts on instagram engender criticism and judgement, she just sweeps it off and does not let it define her. Instead, Ellie Jean asserts control over the narrative, “when I did post on my instagram a lot, it angered a lot of people,” whereas “now I get to talk to these subscribers who I love and the best part about it is I get to be creative every single day.”

Her journey to creating soft core content is in line with many athletes who create adult content. This has been “liberating and empowering” for her. Discussing her website with Sixty Minutes, Ellie had lost many friends because of the original, spicy content which she makes. However her website, “empowered me to motivate other women to not limit themselves in fear of other’s opinions. I really feel this is a movement and I couldn’t be happier”. To be able to create original content for her subscribers and for herself, “I wake up and think what do you want now, what can I express now, what kind of video or photo ... how can I make this work for both of us”. Her website, “It’s a unique thing, a unique platform - the creativity and intimacy between the subscriber and me”. The freedom to still enjoy her sport and to be able to create is liberating, “It allows me to be both a surfing girl and a successful businesswoman.”

Ellie-Jean reveals how having this unique platform had completely changed her life. Reclaiming her agency does not erase the trauma which Ellie-Jean endured, but it is a way to move forward. Ellie Jean can decide what comes next. She has received a lot of support for her new endeavor. “It’s also liberating knowing I’m strong enough to face the adversity and do what I want to do and express myself openly,” Ellie Jean exclaimed.

As she decides what to create next. “I finally feel as though I can express myself freely without the worry of what other people think”. In her Daily Mail Australia interview, she didn’t think that people really think about her content and “to be honest I put out what I’m putting out and anyone can say what they want to say…it shouldn’t give permission to write what they write”. She exclaims how “I’ve always had the pleasure of surfing, now I have the successful business which I feel has truly completed me”. “It’s been hard on social media having all these followers and not being able to talk to them one on one, now launching my website has just been life-changing.

This has come with fresh challenges, as Ellie-Jean along with other creators and models have fallen victim to a “rug pull” by the new CEO of the McCandless Group who has taken ownership of some of her content and has not paid what was due. She is currently navigating this as well. After all the abuse and trauma, Ellie had recently endured more from a “bizarre” international scandal which was manufactured outrage on social media. She was accused of disrespecting a holy lake in India by relieving herself off the side of a boat. In her since viral “A croc almost got me,” instagram post. The post was filmed in the Kimberly region of Australia and not India. With Ellie Jean clarifying in a subsequent post that she had never been to India before. It was like she was victimized all over again with all of this bullying, for something which she did not even do.

This incident demonstrates how unfairly a woman becomes a target of online hate. After the abuse she suffered as a pro surfer, Ellie was again a target of public scrutiny and judgement. Healing is a journey and trauma does not always look like you expect it to. The consequences of the trauma which Ellie Jean survived ultimately shaped her relationship with her body, her identity and with trust. Surviving abuse was also a first step in reclaiming her power and not allowing the people who hurt her to decide what comes next. Ellie Jean restored her autonomy when she became a creative. For Ellie-Jean healing meant a long road to recovery recovery. Which involved rebuilding her boundaries, and finding her voice through creative expression. Ellie-Jean is optimistic about the future for the first time in a while.
